MANCAT

Ken Smith, CAD Services Manager, at Manchester College of Arts & Technology (MANCAT) has been successfully using the SmartScreen support materials since October 2004.  Ken first heard about SmartScreen  following a period of consultancy with City & Guilds, writing some of the content for the CAD level 2 and 3 schemes.  On hearing that the City & Guilds CAD Levels 2 & 3 were to be supported on SmartScreen, his centre was soon quick to subscribe...

'The resources on SmartScreen play a huge role in enhancing the achievement of my learners and helps both learners and tutors to achieve their potential.  Two of my learners recently completed schemes 4353 at Level 2 and 3; one of them has gone onto Salford University and the other to full time employment using CAD.

As well as improving our retention rates year on year the careers advice and guidance supplied on SmartScreen has helped my learners with their employment and progression prospects.  Using the materials available on the site has also assisted in meeting the centre’s ILT/ICT targets and will increasingly do so this year.  Last year I piloted the Certificate in CAD 4353 on a small number of students.  This year I’m rolling it out to a larger number.  SmartScreen has proved to motivate and engage my learners.  It adds another dimension to the learning process, encouraging learners to use the internet and email which they may not have had the confidence to do before.

Back in 2004 our aim was to deliver high quality 2D and 3D CAD programmes and following my period of Consultancy for City & Guilds, I was certain that the support on SmartScreen would not only help in the delivery of the qualifications but would also help us enhance the teaching and learning experiences of staff and students alike.  The practice assignments on SmartScreen are written with the learner in mind, they have separate instructions, which means they can do them in their own time. The assignments are flexible enough for a tutor to demonstrate a variety of outcomes relating to the qualification.  The delivery of these assignments over the internet helps centres to offer rolling programmes of CAD qualifications.

Once the mechanisms and paperwork to deliver the CAD programmes are prepared, SmartScreen saves a considerable amount of my tutors and learners time by allowing them to access and download the information and e-files to complete aspects of the course'.
